ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

** UPDATE **  03/22/2010

I had a chance to use the ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad at Garner State Park for two nights of tent camping.  The air pads worked out well, inflated fast, kept us off the cold ground (low's in the 30's at night).  The pad did not slip around in the tent like other pads can.  I also didn't feel any of the rocks or bumps on the ground.   It takes some work to get it back into the compressed state.  I have found that a little help with my knee makes it alot easier to keep the pad down and the air from coming back in as you are rolling.  Just as soon as you have it rolled up be sure that you close the valve back up.

Just used the ALPS pads again for a two day tent camping trip at Garner State Park.  These pads are very very comfortable!  I found it funny & annoying when I heard people up during the early morning adding more air to their deflated air mattress.  This will not be needed with these pads.  Still a happy camper with these!  Smiley

I recently camped at Martin Dies using Coleman inflatable twin mattresses.  I was not please with the performance.  The battery powered inflator lacks the power to inflate them to a firm condition so we bought a manual pump.  The adaptors on the manual pump did not fit into the mattress so I had to hold the pump hose with one hand and pump with the other.  I got them firm enough but by morning (45F) we were sleeping in hammocks.  The cold air contracted so much it deflated the mattresses.  When we got home, we went to REI and bought some REI 2" self inflating pads.  I hope these pads work better.

Air mattresses on a cold night are no fun!  They deflate as the air cools and act as a heat sink, making the night feel real cold!  I'm sure you will like the REI pads.  I'll never use an air mattress again!  IMO sleeping closer to the ground has a more outdoorish feel to it--if that makes any sense!   Cheesy
