Do you think that the GPS capabilities on smart phones is good enough to not need a dedicated GPS device?

I don't have a smart phone at the present, and I've had almost no hands-on experience with GPS devices.

Im not sure a phone is ready for this task. IMO a GPS device is going to give you more battery life and freatures. I also would be willing to bet you bet a better signal from a GPS device. A cell phone only works if there is a cell tower, they dont work of satellite

I'm with andy on this one - cell based GPS would probably not be as exact, due to the towers relaying info instead of a true satellite...

I agree, I have a BlackBerry Storm and have google maps and the Blackberry Maps, they are ok to use as an aid, but they are far from exact.

I messed around with my Sprint navigator today - it does give current coords and a compass, but that's pretty much it!

We did go gc'ing today too!  Sea World hid a pass and left coords for it, and the finder got 4 free passes!  I just barely missed it... Sad

Check out their FB page or follow @jackreturns on Twitter to hear about these things!
