I would say it all really depends on the area you are going.  Coming from Utah a lot of people have satellite phones they take. 

For me its:
1.  Water
2.  Camera

I'm working on gathering the Ten Essentials from the REI site of suggested gear to take while hiking.  http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/backpacking+day+checklist.html  It seems like overkill, but if you get hurt/lost while hiking I can see how important these items will become. 

What about those black and white cats i see all the time...they like to be hand fed and picked up sometimes...i think that most need a bath.
